Usha International is probably the first corporate to run more than 300 sewing schools all over the country. Started in 1950, the Usha sewing school network include centers run directly by the company, army welfare centers and centers run by individuals that get affiliated to the Usha sewing school network. Every year over 14,000 students are trained in ‘sewing and design’ and ‘embroidery’ in these schools.
The sewing school network is aimed at imparting sewing skills to women, in order to make them self reliant. The courses are designed with the help of professionals in the industry. The courses cover both theoretical as well as practical training so as to provide students thorough knowledge. The students who join the six month course have to appear in an examination and successful students are awarded certificates. There is no examination held for the three month course.
The Usha sewing schools also provide an opportunity to women to earn their livelihoods by becoming a part of the Sewing Schools network. Women can get their sewing schools affiliated to the Usha Sewing School network by conforming to the laid down norms by Usha International.
The sewing school network is closely monitored by the company. Each state has an inspectress who visits the schools to audit the progress. The teachers of the Usha affiliated sewing schools are provided with special training wherein they are updated on the syllabus and new sewing trends.
The examination system is also closely monitored. Question papers are set centrally and sent to all states. The examinations are held all across the country on a predetermined date. The answer sheets are evaluated by a trained group of teachers and certificates issued.
NGOs, social institutions, trusts and other welfare bodies can also benefit from the Usha sewing school network. As a social responsibility program the trainers of such organizations are provided training and the well designed Usha curriculum is shared with them free of cost. These organizations can thereafter run their own programs for imparting sewing education.
